AEO for iGaming: a teardown and a scorecard you can reuse
Search is splitting in two. Half your future players will never see a blue link — they'll read an answer written by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity. Here's how iGaming brands get cited inside that answer, scored as a repeatable 7-point checklist and applied to one major operator.
1. Why iGaming is uniquely exposed to AEO
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines can extract and cite it as a direct response — not so it ranks tenth on a page nobody scrolls. ChatGPT alone now fields hundreds of millions of queries a week, and it, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity each pick sources differently.
iGaming is almost perfectly shaped for this shift. The questions players ask — "best licensed casino in Ontario 2026", "what's the wagering on the bet365 welcome offer", "which slots have the highest RTP" — are exactly the fact-shaped, comparison-shaped queries answer engines are built to resolve. RTP figures, bonus mechanics, licensing status and KYC steps are self-contained facts an AI can lift verbatim. If your page states them cleanly, you get quoted. If it buries them in a promo carousel, a competitor gets quoted instead.
2. The 7-point Answer-Engine Scorecard
Every criterion below is publicly observable — you can check any brand (or your own site) against it in an afternoon, no tools required. Score each 0–3 (0 = absent, 3 = best-in-class). Max 21.
| # | Criterion | What "best-in-class" looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Self-contained answers | Key facts (RTP, wagering, min deposit, licence) stated in one sentence near the top, not inferred across a page. |
| 2 | Structured data / schema | FAQPage, Article and Organization schema so engines can parse Q→A pairs directly. |
| 3 | Freshness signals | Visible "updated" dates; high-value pages refreshed at least quarterly (freshness drives citation retention). |
| 4 | E-E-A-T & authorship | Named authors/reviewers, licence numbers, sources cited — the trust signals AI weights heavily for money-and-your-life topics like gambling. |
| 5 | Comparison & table content | Clean comparison tables answer "best X for Y" queries the way engines like to quote them. |
| 6 | Crawlability for AI bots | GPTBot / Google-Extended / PerplexityBot not blocked in robots.txt; fast, server-rendered HTML (not JS-only). |
| 7 | Entity consistency | Same brand facts (licence, offer, name) stated identically across the site and off-site, so the AI's model of the entity is unambiguous. |
3. Teardown: a major operator, scored
Subject: bet365 — one of the most content-heavy, SEO-mature operators in the industry, useful precisely because it does most things well and still leaves gaps an affiliate can exploit. Scores below reflect the publicly observable criteria above, not any private analytics.
| Criterion | Read | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Self-contained answers | Core betting/casino facts exist but are often gated behind JS widgets and promo framing rather than stated as plain sentences. | 2 |
| Structured data / schema | Strong Organization presence and brand entity; FAQ-style schema is thinner on product/bonus pages than a dedicated content site would run. | 2 |
| Freshness signals | Odds and offers update constantly, but evergreen explainer content rarely shows a clear "reviewed on" date an engine can trust. | 2 |
| E-E-A-T & authorship | Enormous brand authority and licensing footprint — the strongest column. Named editorial authorship is limited. | 3 |
| Comparison & tables | Product breadth is huge but head-to-head "best for" comparison content is deliberately thin (they don't compare themselves to rivals). | 1 |
| Crawlability for AI bots | Heavy client-side rendering and geo/session gating make clean extraction harder than on a static content site. | 2 |
| Entity consistency | Brand facts are extremely consistent worldwide — a textbook-clean entity. | 3 |
| Total | 15 / 21 | |
The pattern is the one you'll see on almost every operator: unbeatable on authority and entity consistency (columns 4 and 7), soft on the content-shaped columns (1, 3, 5) because an operator's site is built to convert, not to answer. That soft middle is the entire opening for affiliates.
4. The affiliate playbook — what to copy this week
You will never out-authority bet365. You can out-answer it. The winning affiliate move is to own the content-shaped criteria the operator neglects:
- Write the one-sentence answer first. Every review/guide opens with the extractable fact: "The bet365 casino welcome offer is [X], wagering [Y]×, min deposit [Z], for players in [GEO]." Then elaborate.
- Ship FAQPage schema on every bonus and game guide — real Q→A pairs mirroring how players phrase queries.
- Date everything, refresh quarterly. A visible "reviewed July 2026" beats an undated operator page for citation retention.
- Build the comparison tables operators won't. "Best RTP slots", "lowest-wagering welcome offers in [GEO]" — the exact "best X for Y" shape engines quote.
- Name your reviewers and cite licences. Gambling is a trust-critical topic; authorship and sourcing are disproportionately weighted.
- Let the AI bots in, and render server-side. Check robots.txt for GPTBot / Google-Extended / PerplexityBot; make sure your facts exist in the raw HTML, not just after JS runs.
5. Method & honesty note
This teardown scores publicly observable signals against the criteria in section 2 — the way any analyst could, by reading the site and its markup. It is an analytical framework, not a claim about any brand's private traffic or its exact ranking inside a specific AI model, which no one outside those companies can measure precisely. AEO principles here are drawn from current published guidance; the scorecard is the reusable asset — apply it to any brand and the reasoning is transparent and repeatable.
